San Francisco Beautiful is the only organization in San Francisco whose sole purpose is to protect and enhance the city´s urban environment. We work year round to improve the quality of daily life, strengthen communities, and empower citizens to maintain the character of the city´s parks, neighborhoods and streets. Through civic initiatives and outreach, grants, and award programs, San Francisco Beautiful helps ensure that this celebrated City by the Bay becomes even better.

2010 Beautification Award Winners
Each year we honor a group of projects that represent the best of San Francisco. Our four 2010 honorees illustrate the depth and breath of San Francisco and San Francisco Beautiful. Four projects; four scales; four quadrants of the city; and four creative ways citizen volunteers have risen to the challenge to make our urban villages greener and more vibrant.
Land’s End Revitalization: California Coastal Trail and Visitor Access Enhancements. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service led the enhancement of this Golden Gate National Parks site. The project was funded by donors following the lead gifts of the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, and is supported by a dedicated group of volunteer Park Stewards.
Cohen Alley, rededicated as The Tenderloin National Forest. Two decades in the making, this alley in the heart of a challenged neighborhood has been transformed, with recent funding from the Art Commission and Mayor’s office, into a garden of redwood trees, performance and public art, classes and activities.
 Pennsylvania Garden. Creative vision, ingenuity, knowledge of horticulture and the inspirational leadership of Anne Shaw have transformed a leftover freeway “no man’s land” into an extraordinary collection of drought-tolerant native species, with the support of Caltrans, SF Department of Public Works, and the SF Parks Trust.
Mint Plaza. This former alley is now a public pedestrian plaza, donated to the City by the Martin Building Company, and maintained and managed by the non-profit Friends of Mint Plaza. With movable chairs for frequent events, this sophisticated design provides a new urban stage and a model for underutilized alleys throughout our inner city.

San Francisco Beautiful Welcomes Jim Chappell as Interim Executive Director |
Your San Francisco Beautiful – with its board, staff, volunteers, and donors -- is now building towards a stronger future as never before. As SFB enters its next phase of development, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Jim Chappell as Interim Executive Director.
Jim, an experienced non-profit executive director, is best known for his leadership at SPUR, a sister organization that has emerged as one of the nation’s pre-eminent civic affairs think-tanks. During his 16-year tenure at that non-profit, Jim grew the staff of two and an annual budget of $270,000 to a staff of 17 and an annual budget of $2.5 million. In addition, he conceived and led the efforts to build the SPUR Urban Center, a 14,500 square foot, $14 million community center that opened last year.

SF Beautiful Founder Friedel Klussmann Inducted Into NEN Hall of Fame |
The Neighborhood Empowerment Network (NEN) is committed to celebrating the people and initiatives that make a difference in the lives of those who live in our neighborhoods. On November 18, 2009 Freidel Klussmann was inducted into the NEN Hall of Fame. Friedel passed away in 1989 but her work lives on through SFB.
