In 2004, San Francisco Beautiful recognized Monroe Elementary School with a Beautification Award. Monroe Elementary is located in the Excelsior neighborhood. The 1970s school’s white walls and plain surfaces attracted graffiti and its curbside planters became repositories for needles and refuse. After years of neglect, school staff and volunteers got together to beautify the school. The result has been very successful. Murals of mosaic tile by Bob Buechting, who directed the school children’s efforts, depict a fabled journey through Africa, Europe, Asia and the Excelsior District. The community garden receives active support from parents and neighbors on weekends.
For more than 40 years, San Francisco Beautiful has been honoring San Franciscans who make special contributions to the unique character and beauty of our City with the Annual Beautification Awards.
