What is fiscal sponsorship?

Fiscal sponsorship is a legal relationship between a group of neighbors representing a project and an existing 501(c) (3) organization which allows the project sponsors to utilize the existing non-profit status without going through the time and expense of starting their own non-profit. Donors get to claim a tax deduction and can feel comfortable that their funds are being safeguarded by a legal entity.

What services does SF Beautiful provide to fiscally sponsored groups?

Being fiscally sponsored by us means that you are legally a project of SF Beautiful. As such you are covered by our general liability insurance, your donors receive an acknowledgement letter from us for their taxes, and you are eligible to apply for grants. We can also provide other kinds of assistance such as helping with fundraising plans and grant writing, being a liaison to City staff and helping with outreach and meeting facilitation. We will discuss your needs during the application process.

What’s in it for SF Beautiful?

We assess a small administrative fee to cover our time and support our program. Usually this is a percentage of a project’s revenue.

How do I apply for fiscal sponsorship?

Complete our online form and we will contact you within one week to discuss next steps. In order to apply, you will need an idea for a project that aligns with our mission and is located in the City of San Francisco. Your project must be publicly-accessible and in most instances located on property that is owned or managed by the City and County of San Francisco, such as a public plaza, sidewalk, or park. You will also need the support of the public agency responsible for the property as well as the support of the impacted community. Your application needs to include a budget and fundraising plan, which we can help you develop.

How long does it take to become fiscally sponsored?

Depending on the complexity of your project it can take 8 weeks for us to review your application. Projects with a budget over $50,000 must be reviewed by our Board which meets ever other month. Once your project is accepted we will enter into a legal agreement with you. Please let us know if there is  grant deadline that you are trying to make.
