People make San Francisco beautiful and unique, and our Board Members are no exception. This month’s interview features Neal Patel, Project Liaison with the SFMTA and Vice President of Community Affairs on the SF Beautiful Board.
What made you want to be a part of San Francisco Beautiful?
I joined the Board of SF Beautiful to help the organization bridge the gap between streets and beautiful, active places. There’s movement in this direction nationwide and SF Beautiful is at the forefront in bringing community and government together to do more – it’s a very exciting time.
What makes Market Street unique?
Market Street is iconic San Francisco at it’s best. It’s where the city, region, and as it sometimes seems, the whole world comes together – often in harmony, sometimes in chaos. Despite it’s flaws, it’s our civic heart and there’s no other street like it.
What would be your “dream project” for Market Street?
I love the success of San Francisco Public Work’s Night Market at UN Plaza – I would love to see this get even bigger with a huge variety of food. I’ve been to some amazing night markets in Asia, and something on that scale would be right at home on Market Street.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I play the cello with the Awesome Orchestra when I can – recently got to play on stage at the Fox Theater in Oakland, in a production of Sly and the Family Stone’s STAND! with over 100 other Bay Area musicians – definitely a highlight of my life. I pretty much enjoy music to be around me all the time.
