As cities go, San Francisco stands out from the crowd. From its celebrated parks and public spaces to the patchwork of neighborhoods, each with its own special character, there’s no place like it. But the forces of neglect and urban decay have left some of the city’s greatest assets in decline and further marginalized its most challenged neighborhoods.

San Francisco Beautiful is doing something about it. Founded in 1947 by Friedel Klussmann in the course of her successful campaign to save San Francisco’s cable cars, San Francisco Beautiful works to preserve and restore our city’s most valued natural and historic resources while helping San Franciscans maintain the unique character and livability of their neighborhoods. To do this we depend on the support of our members – people like you who care about keeping San Francisco a beautiful and livable city.

By becoming a member of San Francisco Beautiful today with a gift of $50 or more, you will help us carry out vital improvement projects in neighborhoods across the City, as well as to undertake major civic initiatives for the benefit of all who live and work in, or visit San Francisco. Additionally, as a member you will receive our quarterly newsletter, The Cable, to keep you informed about initiatives throughout San Francisco and ways that you can make a difference in your own community. We invite members to submit unsolicited articles and other materials (i.e. cartoons) to be considered for publication. SFB maintains the right to edit submitted material.

Sustaining our Communities Through Funding and Recognition

Each year, San Francisco Beautiful gives thousands of dollars in grants to support community projects that improve the urban environment. We also publicly recognize, with our annual Beautification Awards, the dedication of citizens and neighborhood groups who go the extra mile to protect and enhance their corner of the City.

Projects we have supported this year through our grants and awards programs include:

o The Visitacion Valley Greenway Project
o Hillcrest Elementary School Mosaic Mural Project in the Excelsior District
o Quesada Community Garden in Bayview Hunters Point
o Brooks Park in the OMI District
o Kid Power Park in the Mission District
Protecting our Resources Through Civic Initiatives

In addition to providing vital support for neighborhood projects, we join with community groups, civic leaders, businesses, and other organizations to develop innovative programs aimed at restoring and preserving the City’s natural and historic resources while making it a more livable city.

This year alone San Francisco Beautiful has:

o Kept "jumbotron" billboards from being erected on Market Street
o Helped preserve city-owned "surplus" property as neighborhood open space
o Ensured pocket parks and other amenities are included in the Rincon Hill Plan
o Successfully advocated for the restoration of the City's Neighborhood Beautification Fund, providing thousands of additional dollars for community improvement projects
o Served as fiscal agent for the San Francisco Prize International Design Competition for housing along the newly constructed Octavia Boulevard
o Helped draft and pass legislation to control banners on public utility poles
o Worked to control the proliferation of utility boxes on our city's sidewalks
o Led anti-graffiti efforts in our neighborhoods and commercial districts
o Helped negotiate the $2 million settlement arising from the Bloomingdales project and will oversee its distribution for the preservation of historic resources across the City
o Led the San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance and its efforts to green San Francisco's public schools
o Contributed input on a variety of civic projects including the Rincon Hill Plan, Marina Green, Bay Trail, Transbay Terminal, Presidio Parade Grounds, Mid-Market Redevelopment Plan, Lake Merced, Murphy's Windmill and the Geneva Car Barn

From major urban restoration initiatives to neighborhood improvement projects, San Francisco Beautiful is helping preserve and renew our city’s most unique attributes. I know that you share our interest in maintaining San Francisco as a vibrant, scenic, and historic city.
